I am, most of the time, a very planful person. Any type of event, get-together, party, vacation, work schedule, appointment... you name it... I like it planned in advance. Mention spontaneity when it comes to my SCHEDULE and I'll probably start twitching.
So the other day I got a phone call from another local photographer. She'd had a death in the family and wasn't going to be able to shoot a local charitable organization's event. She gave me the basic details... good good, taking notes, mmhumm... then... she says, "It's Friday night." I looked at my watch. My calendar. The date on my computer. My cell phone. All said Wednesday.
* Panic! * If I were a cartoon character, flashing red lights would be coming out of my eyes and steam would probably have started spewing out of my ears... some robotic voice would be repeating, "Unplanned event! ERROR! Unplanned event! ERROR!" A whole sans-serif computer-generated list of reasons why NOT to do the event would come "printing" out of my mouth... and I'd fall into a bunch of metallic pieces.
I'm that pathetic.
But then reality kicked in. The passion for photographing anything and everything (okay. almost anything and everything) kicked in... and I was intrigued. I had a nice chat with my colleague, Erin, and the excitement in her voice got me going. We decided to tackle it together.

It was definitely an experience for me! It was physically challenging ... and I have a new-found respect for event photographers. Whew.
But it was a lot of fun! This particular night, the Hampton Roads chapter of the American Red Cross was holding their Dress Down Under event...
Here's a few sneak peeks:
One of their many amazing volunteers... this volunteer was actually working the beer stand. Oh man. That was one popular lady :)
Their silent auction was a big success! I can't wait to see how much they raised! This was the basket I wanted to bid on... mmmm... hello!
All of the food was donated by Outback Steak House. Amazing organization and amazing staff... and super amazing food (even though I didn't eat any b/c I was too busy admiring it and taking pictures of it... mistake. Note to self: next time, EAT. FREE. FOOD. Kthanksbye).
All in all, though my body hurts and I'm tired beyond measure, it was a really good time!
Until next time,
~K
