My VERY first clients...

Back when we lived in Japan and I didn't even OWN a DSLR camera, I met another budding photographer at work. We went out on a "photo safari" and I brought along my little fuji point-and-shoot... I had no idea what I was doing but liked the idea of creating something with a combination of what I saw through the "lens" and what I could accomplish in post-processing (which at that time was Corel's Paint Shop Pro).

Another of our friends at work, who was pregnant with her first child, asked if we would take some pictures for her... I had NO idea what I was doing... was probably shooting on Auto and was absolutely using a cheap-cheap lens.

I think this is how most of us start... shooting portraits for our friends, practicing, practicing, practicing.... practicing posing and settings and post-processing and interacting with children and couples and making small-talk... it all takes a lot of practice. And, at least where I'm concerned, all of those families who allowed me to practice my trade mean so much to me.

So this family... my very very first photo shoot ever... mean so much. And on top of being my guinea pigs, they are good friends.

So. All that blah-blah aside :) Here are the pics...

Thank-you guys for being amazing!

Until next time,
K

Things That Make Me Nervous...

* Public speaking
* Large crowds
* Walking into a party all by myself
* Cooking for company
* Watching my daredevil boys doing things that are potentially dangerous...

oh wait...

* and photographing other photographers

Inevitably I work myself up into a ball of nerves, but there's something about getting out there, putting the camera up to your face that kind of ... makes it all go away... settings, posing, interacting with little ones all takes precedence and before you know it, you've been out there for 40 minutes and have a CF card full of gorgeous shots. (I really do wish that I could claim that it's 100% me as the photographer...but this family is gorgeous!)

Just a few from Patti's session...

For you photographers out there, Patti is also the owner/creator of Kaleidoscope - A Collection of Color & Light. She's been featured a few times on the MCP Actions blog... most recently here. You should give these a try, they are A LOT of fun!

Mini-Session Sneak Peek... Another New Family! Yorktown Family Photography

When I met this family on Saturday I almost squealed with delight (Really. I do that now and then...usually over shoes or camera gear, but... well...you know). One, they are drop-dead gorgeous, a photographer's dream and.... Two, their little boys are absolutely edible and cute and that baby... oh!... I just want to chomp on his cheeks... nom nom nom.

So we talked for a bit, we played for a while and we took some amazing photographs!

It was so great to meet you guys! I can't wait to show you the rest!!

Until next time,

Mini-Session Sneak Peek... Yorktown Family Photography

I love when I get to spend time with families that are both clients and friends. The last time I photographed this family, sweet baby Timothy was still in his mom's belly. And, to date, this is probably one of my favorite maternity sessions of all time, see HERE to check them out!

What a beautiful family!

Thank-you for being so wonderful!

Until next time,
~K

Life at the Speed of Light...

Have you ever had one of those moments...

You look at a calendar, perhaps offhandedly, and then you realize that... ohmigod... it's October? October?! Really? Wasn't it just July?

Life in this house is non-stop. Just ask our friends who are patient and kind and keep loving us even though we are rarely available for dinner or get-togethers or phone calls... And our family who hear from us in disjointed phone calls in between bath time, story time and bed time... and who are patient and watch the kids grow via facebook...

But even though we are almost constantly tired, we are happy. And we wouldn't have it any other way.

So for this reason (and so many others), I'll be taking a much needed break this holiday season.

See these faces here:

I'm going to spend the holidays reading to them, cuddling on the couch watching 'Home Alone' and 'Elf'...

I'm going to go to bed before midnight...

I'm going to watch this little boy make more of these crazy faces...

And I'm going to try and live life as wide open as he does...

So ... I will be happily re-charged for Spring bookings early next year (watch out for spring mini-session announcements shortly after the holidays)!

Oh and no worries... I'll keep posting to the blog throughout the season!

Until next time,
~K

A Family of Five ... Yorktown Family Photography

I. LOVE. THIS. FAMILY.

This is the second time I've had the pleasure of photographing them and ... they did not disappoint! I spent much of the time running after various kiddos and the other time laughing and giggling (okay, maybe not giggling... I'm really not much of a giggler, more like a snorter/belly laugh/outloud guffaw-type)...because they are so much fun!

These three little ones are some of the most adorable, intriguing and whip-smart kids I've ever met. The twins are just 2 days younger than my little guy, so I know that they are always on the move.

ALWAYS.

Their parents are gorgeous and patient and have a very calm way with their kids. I love it. It just makes you want to be around them!

So here you go guys... thanks for spending a great sunday morning with me!!

Until next time,

~ K

A Windy Beach Session... Hampton Family Photography

There are many reasons I just love this family and it's not that I've known them for years... I met them for the first time the morning of the shoot...

First, they agreed to meet bright and early at 715! Am I one of those crazy, freakishly cheerful morning people? No. Absolutely not. But there is nothing in the world like morning light and it's so nice to be able to shoot a family on the beach in this gorgeous light...

Second, Peter is from MN... which immediately makes him cool.

Third, they've lived in coastal SC... I've lived in coastal SC!

And then to top it all off they were wonderful and brave and adventurous and had a great easy sense of humor! Even when Peter was attacked by a crazy rogue thorny vine (or... maybe he just... you know... backed into it... but it was crazy!) & we had to battle those little sticker-prickly things that affix themselves to EVERYthing...they had a great attitude.

Take care guys and I'll have your gallery up soon :)

And the last of the four families at the beach this year.... Lis I know you've been waiting for this...

I've known these two for a long time and we have a nice long history together. I absolutely love this little girl, but even more, I love watching two of my best friends grow into amazing parents. :)

Miss you guys!

Sarah, Ave & Michael.... Charleston Friends, Round 3... Vacation Photography Hampton Roads

Going through all of these pictures is really making me miss you guys!!

Sarah found out she was pregnant with Avery just a few weeks after we moved to Japan in 2004. I hadn't met her until last year. It was a distinct pleasure, because just like her momma, this little girl radiates personality :) Hope you enjoy this little sneak peek, hopefully I'll have these pics done soon!

Jay, Bria, Christian, & Bella... Charleston Friends, Round 2...Vacation Photography Hampton Roads

I really do have the most beautiful friends. Truly.

I find it so amazing... to see the children of my friends grow up. I could hardly believe it when she told me she was pregnant... and I remember holding little christian in my arms, thinking, "wow..." Time flies.

Your family is beautiful Bri. And these pics don't even scratch the surface :) More for you in a bit :)

Until next time,
